The bearings used in the space shuttle main engine (SSME) high pressure oxidizer turbopump (HPOTP) do not meet the expected life goals that were set for them. In an effort to improve their performance, many solutions are being studied. New bearing materials are being developed, better manufacturing techniques are being investigated, and improved cage materials for better lubrication are being tested. The focus is on the replacement of steel balls with ones made of silicon nitride in 57-mm HPOTP...

Selected tribological, mechanical and thermophysical properties of two versions of PM212 (sintered and hot isostatically pressed, HIPped) are compared. PM212, a high temperature self-lubricating composite, contains 70 wt percent metal bonded chromium carbide, 15 wt percent CaF2/BaF2 eutectic and 15 wt percent silver. PM212 in the sintered form is about 80 percent dense and has previously been shown to have good tribological properties from room temperature to 850 C. Tribological results of a...

Robert Fusaro and Fred Oswald of the Mechanical Components Branch discussed 'Candidate Coatings and Dry Traction Drives for Planetary Vehicles'. Vehicles to be designed for exploration of planets and moons of the solar system will require reliable mechanical drives to operate efficiently. Long-term operation of these drives will be challenging because of extreme operating conditions. These extreme conditions include: very high and/or very cold temperatures, wide temperature ranges, dust, vacuum...

The objective of the program was to conduct a comprehensive materials study for a small, compact, positive displacement hydraulic motor which will use pressurized sea water as the working fluid. Gear, vane and piston-type motors were selected for the study. The design analysis of the critical components of each motor type were conducted using a baseline motor size of 10 gpm at 1000 psi and 5.8 input horsepower in order to establish the loading and speed requirements. Based on material...

The effects of processing and compositional variations on the tribological performance of PM212 were studied. PM212 is a self lubricating powder metallurgy composite, comprised of a wear resistant metal bonded chromium carbide matrix, containing the solid lubricants barium fluoride/calcium fluoride eutectic and silver. Several composites were formulated which had lubricant, matrix, and processing variations. Processing variations included sintering and hot isostatic pressing. Pins fabricated...

A METHOD OF COMPUTATION WAS DEVELOPED FOR COMPUTING PLANE INCOMPRESSIBLE POTENTIAL FLOWS AROUND ARBITRARY THICK, CAMBERED PROFILES WITH CONTINUOUS OR DISCONTINUOUS BLOWING OR SUCTION. IT WORKS WITH SOURCE AND VORTEX DISTRIBUTIONS ON THE CONTOUR AND IN THE INTERIOR OF THE PROFILE. AN INTEGRAL EQUATION FOR THE VORTEX DISTRIBUTION ON THE CONTOUR OF THE PROFILE IS ARRIVED AT, THE SOLUTION OF WHICH IS REDUCED TO A LINEAR SET OF EQUATIONS. FINALLY, THE METHOD YIELDS THE VELOCITY AND PRESSURE...

Solid lubricated bearings utilizing a carbonized phenolic resin composite cage have been evaluated. Functional tests using 204 size bearings were run under ambient conditions at speeds up to 10,000 rpm. The average life of the five bearings tested was 18 1/4 hours with the maximum life being less than 50 hours. No further testing of these particular materials is anticipated. (Author)

Polymers, which are added to liquids to control the liquid's dissemination properties, also alter the rheological properties of the liquid. The polymer solutions exhibit such non-Newtonian properties as shear thinning and normal stress, which are not included in the usual Newtonian fluid model. This report evaluates theoretically how these non-Newtonian properties affect the spreading of liquid drops on ideal surface. Using the lubrication approximation, the spread rates and size doubling times...

Numerous premature failures of large azimuth bearings (up to 13-1/2 feet in diameter) in the AN/FPS-24 and AN/FPS-35 radars were a major cause of concern to the Air Force because of reduced availability of the radars and the high cost of bearing replacements. An intensive program was undertaken to increase bearing life and to reduce the impact of bearing failures on system operation and maintenance. Much of the information developed by this program is applicable not only to the specific problem...

A list is presented covering those shipboard machines which are logical candidates for gas bearing applications. The method used in making the selection is shown and explained. This consists of using one matrix to determine the adaptability of a process fluid lubricated bearing to various classes of machinery, and another to determine the benefits to be gained by using these bearings. These evaluations are then weighed to determine suitable candidate machines. In addition, a machine is selected...

This report provides a method of evaluating the endurance of tracked and wheeled vehicles. It prescribes mileage or hours of operation over standard test courses, including land and water, for the various types of vehicles, interspersed with vehicle mission tests. It also covers loads, towed loads, speeds, maintenance, and inspections and use of the tachograph for recording speed, mileage, and operating time, and applies to all types of vehicles except materials handling equipment.

This report covers flight service evaluation of composite inboard ailerons on the L-1011 under contract NAS1-15069 for a period of five years. This is the fifth and final annual report of the maintenance evaluation program, and covers the period from July 1986 when the fourth yearly inspections were completed, through May 1987. Four shipsets of graphite/epoxy composite inboard ailerons were installed on L-1011 aircraft for this maintenance evaluation program. These include two Delta and two TWA...

The resource levels required for operation and support of reusable launch vehicles are typically defined through discrete event simulation modeling. Minimizing these resources constitutes an optimization problem involving discrete variables and simulation. Conventional approaches to solve such optimization problems involving integer valued decision variables are the pattern search and statistical methods. However, in a simulation environment that is characterized by search spaces of unknown...
